This article focuses on consumer contracts in the light of the implementation of Directive 93/13/EEC on unfair contractual terms into Slovak law (e.g. Article 1 and Articles 3-7 of Directive 93/13/EEC are implemented into Act No. 40/1964 Coll. Civil Code, as amended and Act No. 250/2007 Coll. on consumer protection, as amended).

This article further analyses European law with respect to consumer protection, focusing on the provisions of Directive 93/13/EEC as a main source of Slovak consumer law, supported by the case law of the Court of Justice of the European Union (decisions C-240/98, C-244/98, C-237/02, C-478/99, etc.).

The article also inspects the application of the rights resulting from consumer contracts under the Slovak legislative framework governing consumer protection, mainly Act No. 634/1992 Coll. on consumer protection (currently Act No. 250/2007 Coll. on consumer protection, as amended) as well as the relevant provisions of the Slovak Civil Code, Act No. 513/1991 Coll. Commercial Code, as amended and Act No. 97/1963 Coll. on private international law, as amended.
