The article is the first segment of a two-part legal exposé concerning social media platforms. In this particular article, the author focuses on  constitutional law, civil law, criminal law, and consumer protection aspects of social media platforms. The article also establishes the basic legal framework for the evaluation of the platforms. With regard to consumer protection in particular, the article makes reference to Directive 2011/83/EU, in connection with the expansion of Directive 93/13/EC. It also establishes that the former Directive expands to digital content services, but only to those for which the consumer pays directly (thus excluding social media platforms for the most part).
