The aviation sector is increasingly focusing on sustainability. Consumers, too, can play a role in becoming more sustainable by participating in a voluntary CO2 compensation scheme. A consumer participating in such a scheme makes a financial contribution to the airline or external organisation with the aim of compensating for the emissions of the flight made by the consumer. The compensation takes place by, for example, investing in sustainable cooking equipment, or by planting trees. This article discusses some of the legal issues that may arise for consumers when participating in such a compensation scheme. The focus in this article is on the protection that the Unfair Commercial Practices Directive can offer consumers.
